Seventh North American Bahá’í Conference on Law

Friday, Oct. 14 – Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011

at

The John Marshall Law School, Chicago, IL

Theme:

Applying Bahá’í Principles to Contemporary Legal Issues and the Practice of Law

Keynote speaker: Brent Poirier will speak on “Bahá’ís: Promoting the Most Great Law,” exploring ethics common to the Most Holy Book, the Constitution of the Universal House of Justice, and standards of professional conduct for attorneys, as well as social goals common to the World Order of Bahá’u’lláh and the American democracy.

Call for proposals: Proposals for presentations will continue to be accepted until July 31, 2011. Proposals for plenary sessions, breakouts, panels, discussions of work in progress, etc., should be no more than 500 words, and sent to bahailawconference@gmail.com. Law students and recent law grads are especially encouraged to submit proposals. Presenters in related fields other than law are also welcome. Proposals may be based on any combination of research, law practice, scholarship, and experience in service, and should address one of the following:

(1) Applying Bahá’í Principles to Contemporary Legal Issues. In what ways might study and application of the Bahá’í Writings contribute to current law and policy discourse in various areas, including but not limited to social justice issues, human rights, governance, sustainable development, property disputes, women’s rights, jurisprudence, intellectual property, conflict resolution, criminal justice, family law, and minority rights?

(2) Applying Bahá’í Teachings to the Practice of Law. How do the tenets and teachings expressed in the Bahá’í Revelation guide or inform your practice of law? Practitioners are encouraged to share their learning experiences and reflections on this question across the broad spectrum of legal specialties, including but not limited to non-profit organizations, public interest advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, family law, bankruptcy law, and trusts & estates.

Purposes of the Conference: Many Bahá’ís are engaged in social action and public discourse through their occupations, and Bahá’í-inspired organizations at all levels are also working for the betterment of humanity. As we reflect on how Bahá’í teachings inform the theory and practice of law, we will be sharing learning, experience and insights among lawyers and others engaged with these issues. We seek to contribute thereby to building individual and collective capacity for related service in the spheres of social action and public discourse, among Bahá’ís and all others who share these aims.

Another announcement will be posted when the conference website is available for further information. In the meantime, please address any questions to the organizing committee at bahailawconference@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!

International Symposium on Intellectual Othering and the Bahai Question in Iran

June 13th, 2011 § 3 Comments

The University of Toronto and the Toronto Initiative for Iranian Studies in collaboration with the Foundation for Iranian Studies presents an International Symposium on Intellectual Othering and the Bahai Question in Iran.

From the Symposium website:

As a genuinely Iranian intellectual and religious movement emerging in the mid-nineteenth century, the Baha’i Faith has encountered relentless and sustained repression and scapegoating in the country of its origin. Exploring various aspects of the Baha’i Question in Iran over the past century and a half, the scholars participating in this international conference will critically reflect on a wide range of issues related to the similarities and differences of Shi’i Islam and Baha’i Faith, the role of Baha’is in Iranian cultural and intellectual life, and the fact of their continued repression and intellectual Othering.

The Symposium will take place from July 1-3, 2011 at the University of Toronto at the Isabel Bader Theatre, Victoria College.  It appears that the Conference will take place in Farsi with some English translation and that there will be some TV and web broadcasting.

The program offers a variety of talks of potential  interest to the members of the ABS SIG on Law & Governance.
